The Hippest hop

FOR clever New Yorkers who run successful businesses from home, pets often play a key role – and that’s exactly the case for Kevin Dresser and Kate Johnson of Brooklyn, two talented graphic designers with many prestige clients, including the Museum of Modern Art.

In 2005, after their first pet bunny, Bun, passed away, the couple thought about starting a rabbit- sitting service, with Web cams for office-bound owners to check in on their flop-eared friends. The idea quickly evolved into a website called Bklynbunny.com

It takes imagination to look at the Brooklyn Bridge and see a monumental set of rabbit ears – but that’s what the design duo did, creating an unforgettable site logo. Then the inevitable happened: They adopted a rescued rabbit from a local vet.

Dresser and Johnson named the 3-pound white dwarf hotot rabbit Roebling, after the architect of their favorite bridge, and began offering visitors to BklynBunny.com glimpses into Roebling’s world via Web cam. Internet surfers – as many as 6,000 of them – can’t seem to get enough of the little guy’s antics.

“People e-mail us that they were having a bad day, but seeing Roebling made them feel better,” Dresser says.

The duo also recently collaborated with brilliant Brooklyn perfumer Christopher Brosius on two refreshing home fragrances: Lettuce and Apple, inspired by Roebling’s favorite treats. They’re for sale on the site, which also offers T-shirts and magnets, plus a link to the House Rabbit Society listing of adoption groups. Two local resources are Animal Care & Control (nycacc.org) and Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro, NJ.

Roebling provides hours of amusement for his two biggest fans at the home office. “I like that he flops on his side like a lab,” says Dresser. Johnson enjoys when Roebling steals papers from the recycle pile. “He’ll take an 8½-by-11 sheet and run the length of the apartment with one of our logo designs,” she says with a laugh.

“Roebling reminds everyone to be relaxed and laid-back – like a bunny,” Dresser concludes.
